I really should have expected something like this to happen.

[The voice that's speaking is a deep, adult one. One that some people should find unsettlingly familiar. The person the voice belongs to probably looks unsettlingly familiar too.]

I mean, compared with the pony thing, this is practically mundane.

[He pauses and sighs, annoyed]

So is it just affecting me, or did this happen to everyone else?

Because I won't have a heart anymore and I...

I don't really know what happens, I'm not sure I want to know. I just know the efforts to get my heart back won't be "honorable"

You... won't have a heart? So you'd be like-

...Wait a second. [Ven sets his drink pouch down, because he's... epically confused and likely to squeeze the whole thing out at this rate.] You're telling me that at some point after our time, you're going to lose your heart.

...How are you going to lose your heart? You don't have an evil clone yourself, do you?

Something bad happens to Radiant Garden.

Something... bad? What happens? [And now Ven's looking worried, too. He likes that place - a lot. He doesn't want anything happening to it, let alone his friends.]

A "catastrophe"

I don't know what happens, I don't want to know, I just know it's bad.

So... something happens, and you... you lose your heart.

[And things are settling into place. Ven doesn't like the picture this paints.]

So someone said you're going to become a Nobody?

A Nobody? Is that what people with no hearts are called?

[Whoops. Ven had thought that the term was general knowledge, but apparently not... He's quiet for a moment, debating on whether he should do this or not, but in the end concern for a friend wins out. He'll apologize to Roxas later.]

Yeah... Sora and Roxas told me about them. I never heard of them before that, but they said it's when someone with a really strong heart and will loses their heart. Sometimes... sometimes the body gets back up and keeps moving, and those are called Nobodies. The very strongest look human, with pretty much the same appearance and everything.

...Roxas is a Nobody.

[Isa's hand instinctively goes up to his chest. He also tries to work out the anagram, and looks up with a start]

Roxas is Sora's Nobody?

Yeah... He is. At least, that's what they told me, both of them.

[And yet Roxas looks like Ven...]

You can't tell Lea any of this. You hear me?

Why not? If he asks, then I'm not hiding it from him. If he doesn't bring it up, I won't either, but I'm not going to lie to him.

[...Yeah, Ven's got the serious face on. This is... important to him.]

Because he. I don't know if he'd be able to handle it, and he knows too much about Axel anyway.

[And it's Ven's turn to go silent and look at the floor. There's a lot about who he is, and what he is, that he's still coming to grips with. But he was lied to by people he trusted, used by them - almost killed by them. He's still as friendly as he is even after all that, but Ven's also developed some pretty solid thoughts about situations like Isa's talking about.]

...It's not about... handling it or not handling it, Isa. [This is going to be difficult to explain, isn't it.] There's stuff about me - a lot of stuff - that even I didn't know about until recently. Stuff I should have known. Things that almost ended the worlds. And no one told me about it, they thought by keeping me at home, keeping me ignorant, that that way maybe the bad stuff wouldn't happen. And so when it all came around, I wasn't able to fight it, and we all nearly lost everything.

You can't keep him in the dark if he wants to know. It's not fair to him - and you guys have your hearts, you're not Nobodies. Maybe you look like them right now, but you're not them, and you're both good guys.

[Isa doesn't know what to say to that, because Ven's right. He can't keep this from Lea. He sighs and buries his face in his hands]

At least let me tell him?

[There's an almost pained sounding sigh]

I know we're not them, but... the way they looked at me, it's like they were scared of me. [And that, Ven, was what was ultimately bothering him tonight]

Okay, but I'd have someone else there to explain stuff, too. Not me, I don't know much about it - one of the ones from the future. It's Lea, he's going to ask a lot more questions... that or run away from everything.

[You could never be too sure, with him. And Ven's watching Isa closely - he can tell that that's what's bothering him. Isa's good at hiding his emotions but Ven's pretty good at sensing problems, even if he doesn't realize he's doing it.]

...I get the feeling that... that Nobodies aren't like the people they were. [He doesn't know if this will help or not, but he hopes it does.] Sora and Roxas - they're so different. I'm more like both of them than they are each other. So it's not you - they're not scared of you.

They can't be, Lea doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but Axel's kidnapped and attacked people, and...

If that's what became of Lea, what happened to me?

[He doesn't say anything for a long time, because really... there's nothing he can say. Everyone being afraid of Isa means that whatever happens in the future, it probably isn't good. Ven's not going to blatantly lie to a friend, especially when that friend is smart enough to put the pieces together himself.]

[Instead, after a minute, Ven raises a hand and clasps Isa's shoulder. It's not much, but Isa's not a touchy guy.]

I don't know. But you'll always have your friends.

[And he takes his hand off, because Isa's really not a touchy guy. And it's his turn for a confession, since he hopes it'll help Isa stop worrying.]

I don't think I'm alive, in their time.

[Isa tenses up at Ven touching him, but tries to relax again]

I guess you're right.

You're not?

I don't know. [He'll be honest here; what else can he be?] Between when I met you guys and when I came here, I nearly died at least three times. Those of us with Keyblades, we don't... really live safe lives. If there's trouble somewhere, we've gotta go fix it. And there were a couple of people who were trying to destroy everything, and we fought them - that guy who looks like Sora, he was one of them. He's my negative side - that's why I jumped him when he showed up here; I was trying to get rid of him quick. Guess we're too evenly matched, though, even without all the things we can usually do.

[He sighs, kind of deeply, looking up at the ceiling.]

I really thought I was dead when I got here - me and Vanitas, we were fighting. And to beat him, I'd had to destroy my own heart. I remember choosing to do it, not caring what happened to me, and then fighting him and winning and my body just breaking into pieces... then I was here. And Sora and Riku and everyone had never heard of me, and we all have Keyblades. Everyone with a Keyblade knows each other, so why didn't they know me?

The guy who looks like Sora?

Just.... just because they don't know you doesn't mean you're dead. There could be another explanation...

[He knows it's unlikely, but he can't really stand hearing someone like Ven talk about these things]

Why do you guys have Keyblades anyway?

I thought I was. Beating him destroyed my heart - how can you live without a heart? [Rhetorical question, but still.] But when I got here, Aqua said that I didn't die. She said that I lost my heart, and my body was asleep, waiting for it to come back. I don't really care which one it is, so long as I kept her and Terra safe. That's all that matters.

[No, Isa, Ven's not suicidal. He's just prepared to do what has to be done if he needs to do it. He picks up his drink pouch again, taking a sip and making a face after he swallows.]

That's really sweet. And we have Keyblades to... well, do what we were doing when we met. Me, Aqua, and Terra were fighting those monsters that popped up - they were called the Unversed. Keyblade users protect the worlds and the people in them, and fight the Darkness where it threatens to take over. Sometimes bad things happen because we put ourselves in the line of fire, but I don't think any of us would change our minds about being one.

Roxas seems to manage.

Wait, wouldn't you become a Nobody afterwards? You sound like you have a pretty strong will to me.

I don't think I could manage a life like that, I'm not the heroic type, like you or Sora.

They told me that a Nobody is a body that lost its heart but keeps moving, but according to Aqua, mine didn't do that. I don't... really know how, but it looks like I'm different somehow. Maybe 'cause my heart's been messed with before.

[Oh how right he was, though he didn't know it.]

I think you'd do all right - I don't remember not ever having a Keyblade; my memory's gone from before Vanitas was taken out of me. But I don't think I was raised to do it or anything like that. I think if you just found something important to you that you wanted to protect, you'd be good at it. You've already shown you can do it.

[Remember when your shade was picking on Lea? Ven's thinking of that.]
